U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who represents Colorado’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on September 10, 2025, addressing gun violence, suicide prevention, and an active assailant incident at Evergreen High School.
In her first post of the day, Pettersen called for legislative action to address gun violence. She wrote on X: “Thoughts & prayers alone aren’t going to end the epidemic of gun violence. As a mom, I cannot even fathom the anguish & heartbreak of parents who will never see their kids again. I’m demanding @speakerjohnson do more to prevent these tragedies so our kids can grow up in a” (September 10, 2025).
Later that day, Pettersen shared a personal story about losing her brother to suicide and emphasized the importance of discussing mental health issues. She stated: “I lost my older brother, Justin to suicide. That painful loss never leaves our family and we think about him every day. I share our story so others who have lost loved ones or are struggling themselves know they are not alone. On #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, we must talk about” (September 10, 2025).
Following reports of an emergency at Evergreen High School later that afternoon, Pettersen commented on the developing situation: “Shocked & heartbroken to see there is an ongoing incident involving an active assailant at Evergreen High School. I’m hopeful that law enforcement is able to intervene & ensure all of our kids come home safe. We are in communication with local law officials & will be there to” (September 10, 2025).
Brittany Pettersen has represented Colorado’s 7th congressional district since replacing Ed Perlmutter in 2023 and previously served in both chambers of the Colorado legislature from 2013 through early 2023. Born in Colorado in 1981 and currently residing in Lakewood at age 41, she holds a BA from Metropolitan State University of Denver.
