U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who represents Colorado’s 7th district in Congress, addressed her community through a series of posts on September 11, 2025, expressing grief and outrage following a tragic incident at a local school and commemorating the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
In her first post on September 11, Pettersen wrote: “I know our state and our community are shocked and terrified. Children were dropped off at school this morning — a place that should be safe — only to face unimaginable tragedy. My heart breaks for the students who are fighting for their lives in the hospital, the parents who are” (posted on September 11, 2025).
She continued in a subsequent message: “I’m grateful for the brave Jeffco law enforcement officers whose quick response undoubtedly saved lives. But I’m also outraged. Our kids, our teachers, and our communities continue to pay the price for failed policy and failed leadership. This was preventable. And it’s” (posted on September 11, 2025).
Later that day, Pettersen reflected on the national significance of September 11: “Today we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the ways our nation was forever changed. The pain of that day is still felt by families, survivors, and all of us who continue to carry their memory.
We honor the nearly 3,000 innocent people and the first responders” (posted on September 11, 2025).
Brittany Pettersen has served as U.S. Representative for Colorado’s 7th District since replacing Ed Perlmutter in 2023. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of both chambers of Colorado’s legislature from 2013 to early 2023. Born in Colorado in 1981 and currently residing in Lakewood at age forty-one, Pettersen holds a Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.
