U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who represents Colorado’s 7th district in Congress, used her social media platform on December 16, 2025, to express concerns over recent legislative actions regarding immigration and the treatment of immigrant children.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pettersen called for comprehensive changes to U.S. immigration policy: “We desperately need real immigration reform that secures our borders, invests in a fair and quick judicial process for those seeking asylum, provides pathways for people to work here in areas of need, and treats people with dignity – especially vulnerable children.” The congresswoman emphasized the importance of balancing border security with humane treatment for those seeking refuge.
Pettersen also criticized Republican leaders’ legislative priorities at the end of the year. On December 16, she wrote: “I’m deeply disappointed – but not surprised – that this is how the Republican Leadership has decided to spend our last legislative week of the year. Immigrants have been used as nothing more than a scapegoat since Trump took office. (3/4)”
Addressing specific legislation, Pettersen voiced opposition to the Kayla Hamilton Act. In her post from the same day, she stated: “The Kayla Hamilton Act claims to be about protecting kids, but the reality is that it treats unaccompanied children like criminals. Without any due process, it risks going back to the days of separating families and putting kids in cages.”
Brittany Pettersen has served as Colorado’s 7th district representative since 2023 after succeeding Ed Perlmutter. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of both chambers of Colorado’s state legislature from 2013 through early 2023. Born in Colorado in 1981 and residing in Lakewood, Pettersen holds a Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.
