U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen, currently representing Colorado’s 7th district in Congress, shared a series of posts on August 27, 2025, reflecting on her experiences as a woman in government and the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

In one post commemorating Women’s Equality Day, Pettersen wrote: “Today, is Women’s Equality Day! 105 years ago, women were officially granted the right to vote. It’s been over a century but I often think about how places like Congress aren’t built for women. I know we’ve got a long way to go until we actually reach equality for everyone.” (August 27, 2025).

She also discussed personal challenges faced after the birth of her son earlier in the year: “Earlier this year, I gave birth to my son, Sam, & was denied the ability to vote remotely. I wasn’t allowed to do my job simply because I had a baby – this type of antiquated thinking is part of what prevents women from having a seat at the table & upholds the status quo.” (August 27, 2025).

Addressing perseverance amid political uncertainty and underrepresentation, Pettersen stated: “But we’re not going to stop fighting to have our voices heard & our stories told. Like so many young women, I’ve been underestimated & overlooked my whole life. And even in the face of uncertainty under the Trump administration, I’ll keep showing up everyday to fight for” (August 27, 2025).

Pettersen has served in Congress since replacing Ed Perlmutter in 2023 and previously held seats in both chambers of Colorado’s state legislature from 2013 through early 2023. She was born in Colorado in 1981 and resides in Lakewood. Pettersen earned her Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.
