The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has released updated details about the active shooter incident that occurred in Evergreen, Colorado, on February 12, 2026. Authorities have identified the gunman as Lance Black, a 62-year-old resident of Evergreen.
Deputies responded to reports of gunshots at the CommonSpirit Primary Care office on Ellingwood Trail at around 4:23 p.m. and arrived within five minutes. Upon arrival, they observed broken glass windows believed to have been caused by gunfire. Inside the health care building, deputies found an adult male armed with a shotgun. According to officials, “Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the gunman used his shotgun to take his own life.” The Sheriff’s Office noted that Black had previously been a patient at the facility; however, investigators are still looking into his motive.
A search of the medical offices and surrounding shopping center confirmed there were no injuries or additional threats. Investigators reported that approximately 19 rounds were fired into equipment, computers, doors, and walls inside the facility. No other businesses in the strip mall were damaged except for one vacant office struck by a round. Officials stated that they are confident Black acted alone and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
