No. 4 seed Utah State (22-10, 11-7 MW) won its first Mountain West Women’s Volleyball Tournament after defeating No. 2 seed San José State (21-9, 14-4 MW) in four sets on Friday night at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The Spartans won a back-and-forth first set, which featured six ties and four lead changes, before the Aggies rattled off wins in three-straight sets, to secure a 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19).
Utah State, which will advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010, was led on the night by all-tournament honoree Tatum Stall, who had a match-high 17 kills and hit .342. Mountain West tournament MVP Shelby Capllonch led the Aggies with 39 kills for the tournament, averaging 3.9 per set.
Spartans were limited to just a .106 hitting percentage, their lowest against a Conference opponent this season.
The Aggies will continue their season in the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, beginning on Thursday, Dec. 1. The selection show is slated for Sunday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
