GOLDEN: Clear Creek Waterway Restrictions Eased

Announcement

Golden issued the following announcement on June 4.

Effective immediately and by order of Golden Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick, and  Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader restrictions regulating waterway activities on Clear Creek have been modified from a full closure to a partial use restriction within the City of Golden and unincorporated Jefferson County. Under the partial use restriction, single-chambered, air-inflated devices such as inner tubes are prohibited; however, vessels, whitewater canoes, or kayaks are now allowed on the creek. Boundaries of the restriction extend from JeffCo’s western border at State Highway 119 eastward along Clear Creek Canyon through the city limits of Golden to Vanover Park.

The decision to ease the restrictions is due in part to the Governor’s “Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors” phase to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office guaranteed arrangements have been made with other response agencies including West Metro Fire, Arvada Fire, and Alpine Search and Rescue to ensure sufficient public safety resources are available to assist Golden Fire if necessary. People recreating on the creek under the partial use restriction should continue wearing a mask and follow social distancing requirements.

The penalty for violating this restriction is a class 2 petty offense and will result in a fine of $100.00. These temporary waterway restrictions shall remain in effect through June 25, 2020, unless extended, superseded, or repealed.
